Get Your Business Recommended by AI —
Not Just Ranked on Google
When someone asks ChatGPT for the best provider in their city, it names three to five businesses. Answer Engine Optimization is how you become one of them.
What is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring your business information so AI assistants name your business when someone asks for a recommendation. Traditional SEO competes for a position in a list of links. AEO competes to be one of the three to five businesses an AI actually names in its answer.
It applies across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot. The shift matters because a growing share of buyers now ask an assistant for a recommendation instead of scrolling search results — and an AI answer names a handful of businesses and skips the rest entirely. If you are not named, you are invisible at the exact moment a buying decision is being made.
How AI assistants decide which businesses to recommend
AI assistants do not pull recommendations from your website alone. They cross-reference several independent sources and look for consistency, authority, and recency across all of them.
- Google Business ProfileThe single strongest signal for local recommendations. Category, service area, hours, and service descriptions written as complete sentences all feed AI answers directly.
- Your websiteSpecifically direct-answer content — pages where a two-to-four sentence passage fully answers the question being asked, rather than burying the answer in paragraph seven.
- Review platformsGoogle Reviews, Yelp, BBB, and industry-specific sites. Volume, recency, and rating consistency all contribute to whether an AI treats you as a safe recommendation.
- DirectoriesAngi, HomeAdvisor, Thumbtack, chambers of commerce, and trade associations. These provide the corroboration AI uses to confirm a business is real and active.
- Reddit and community forumsIncreasingly weighted, especially for "best [service] in [city]" style questions, because assistants treat unpaid peer discussion as higher-trust evidence.
- Social profilesFacebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn. Active, consistent profiles reinforce that the business is current — dormant ones quietly undercut you.
The practical consequence: a business with a complete profile, strong recent reviews, and consistent mentions across these sources gets recommended over a business with a better-looking website and nothing else. AEO is mostly the work of making those sources agree with each other.
AEO vs SEO: what's the difference?
SEO optimizes a page to rank. AEO optimizes your business to be named in an answer. SEO earns a click from a list of results; AEO earns the recommendation itself, often with no click at all.
| Traditional SEO | Answer Engine Optimization | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank a page in the results list | Be one of the businesses the AI names |
| Winning looks like | Position 1–3, a click to your site | Your name in the answer, often no click |
| Main levers | Keywords, backlinks, technical health | Profile completeness, reviews, directories, community mentions, answer-shaped content |
| Competitors | Ten links on a page | The three to five names in one answer |
| Where it's decided | Mostly your own site | Mostly off your site |
They share fundamentals — a crawlable, fast, clearly written site helps both. The divergence is weighting: AEO puts far more emphasis on signals you don't control from your CMS.
Do I still need AEO if I already rank #1 on Google?
Yes. Ranking first and being recommended by AI are separate outcomes produced by different systems. A business can hold the top organic position and still be completely absent from the shortlist an assistant gives.
That happens because AI answers weigh Google Business Profile data, review signals, directory corroboration, and community mentions rather than page rank alone. We regularly run visibility checks on businesses that rank well on Google and score zero out of one hundred on AI recommendation — the two simply are not the same race.
How do I check whether AI recommends my business?
Ask the assistants directly. Open ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google and ask for the best provider of your service in your city, then see whether your business is named and which competitors are named instead.
Or run the free AI Visibility Check
We ask five buying-intent questions about your category and city across AI engines, then report how often your business is mentioned — scored out of 100 — along with the competitors the AI named in your place. Takes about a minute, no charge.
Run My Free AI Check →How long does AEO take to work?
On-page and profile changes can be picked up within days to a few weeks, because AI assistants re-crawl and re-query live sources frequently. The off-site signals that matter most — reviews and community mentions — build over months.
A realistic expectation for most local and service businesses is early movement in four to eight weeks, with meaningful change over a quarter. Anyone promising to make you the top AI recommendation in a week is describing something that doesn't exist.
AEO questions, answered
Does schema markup get you cited by ChatGPT?
Not on its own. Schema helps Google and Bing generate rich results and understand your business, so it's still worth implementing. But controlled testing has found no measurable effect of adding FAQ or Article schema on how often ChatGPT cites a page — it reads the markup as raw text rather than parsing its properties. What moves ChatGPT citations is content structured so a two-to-four sentence passage answers the question completely, plus recognition from third-party sources.
Can I submit my site to ChatGPT the way I submit a sitemap to Google?
No. There is no submission endpoint, no IndexNow equivalent, and no Search-Console-style tool for OpenAI. You can only make yourself pullable — crawlable and unblocked for OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot — and discoverable, by being present on the sources its live layer already queries. Anyone selling "submit your site to ChatGPT" is selling nothing.
Which AI assistants does this cover?
ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot. They differ in how they retrieve sources, but they converge on the same underlying preferences: clearly structured answers, corroboration across independent sources, and recognizable, active businesses.
Is AEO only for local businesses?
No, but local and service businesses see the sharpest effect, because "best [service] in [city]" is exactly the kind of question people now ask an assistant instead of a search engine. B2B and SaaS companies face the same dynamic on comparison and "best tool for X" style questions, where the assistant names a short list of vendors.
What does Avalux actually do for AEO?
We audit how AI engines currently answer the buying questions in your category, fix the on-site half — answer-shaped content, structured data, crawler access — and then work the off-site half that decides most outcomes: Google Business Profile, reviews, directory corroboration, and community presence. You get a baseline score, the work, and re-checks to show movement.
How much does it cost?
It's scoped per business, month-to-month with no long-term contract, and depends on how much off-site work is needed. Start with the free AI Visibility Check — the score and competitor list tell us most of what we need, and we'll quote from there on a short call.
